When to recommend Difflam

Oral medications

Recommend Difflam for a wide range of sore throat and mouth conditions1-3, including:

  • Pharyngitis
  • Traumatic conditions such as tonsillitis and tonsillectomy
  • Post-operative sore throat
  • The use of naso-gastric tubes
  • Dental procedures
  • Mouth and dental ulcers
  • Oral ulceration due to radiation therapy

The Difflam range has been found to have gastroprotective effects,4 and topical administration has not been associated with the gastrointestinal irritation seen with systemic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).1-4

In addition, Difflam has been found to reduce the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat,5 whilst routine prophylactic use has also been shown to help prevent ulceration and pain during radiotherapy.7,8 Difflam Spray can also be used to treat children of all ages.2

Product dosage information

The tables below provide a summary of the oral products in the Difflam range.

  • Available on prescription or from the pharmacy
  • Children < 6 years old: 1 puff/4kg body weight, max 4 puffs
  • Children 6-12 years old: 4 puffs
  • Children >12 years old: Repeat dose every 1½ to 3 hours, as necessary
    Uninterrupted treatment should not exceed 7 days unless under medical supervision

  • For adults and children >12 years old: 15ml gargle for 30 seconds

Difflam Oral Rinse is indicated for the relief of painful inflammatory conditions of the throat including pharyngitis (sore throat). Difflam Oral Rinse contains the active ingredient Benzydamine Hydrochloride. The other ingredients are ethanol (96% v/v), glycerol, saccharin sodium BP, mouthwash flavour, 52 503/T, polysorbate 20, methyl hydroxybenzoate quinoline yellow (E104), patent blue V (E131), purified water.5

  • Available on prescription or from the pharmacy
  • For adults and children >12 years old: 15ml gargle for 30 seconds
  • Repeat dose every 1½ to 3 hours, as necessary

Difflam creams

Recommend Difflam 3% Cream for a wide range of symptoms associated with painful
inflammatory conditions of the musculo-skeletal system9-10, including:

  • Traumatic conditions such as sprains, strains, contusions and the after-effects of fractures
  • Sore muscles
  • Acute inflammatory disorders such as myalgia and bursitis
  • Stiff joints

Product dosage information

Each tube of Difflam 3% Cream contains Benzydamine Hydrochloride 3% w/w for topical application to skin.

The tables below provide a summary of the topical products in the Difflam range.

  • Available on prescription or from the pharmacy
  • For topical application to skin
  • Massaged lightly into the affected area. Depending on the size of the site to be treated, 35 - 85 mm should be applied 3 times daily, and at the discretion of the Doctor, up to 3 times daily in more severe conditions
  • No special dosage recommendations are made for elderly patients
  • Uninterrupted treatment should not exceed 10 days unless under medical supervision
  • Well absorbed through the skin and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and local anaesthetic actions
  • Available on prescription or from the pharmacy
  • For topical application to skin
